Objectively Evolving Your Own Subjectivity

The older I get, the more I realize how “period specific” subjectivity is.

Design trends are reflections of the moments that they exist in, and so are our opinions of those trends. Something that subjectively sucked 20 years ago might not subjectively suck today.

My preexisting bias against the trend still exists, but the context in which that subjectivity existed is 20 years removed. In that sense, it's important to try and occasionally reframe my perspective.

Lillian was reminded of the Talmudic words: “We do not see things as they are, we see them as we are.”

- Anaïs Nin

I can’t ever hope to really understand and appreciate something anew if I approach it 20 years out of context.
